Ford Bronco Camping Patent Reveals Innovative Overlanding Setup
Ford’s new Bronco camping patent reveals a unique sleeping platform, rooftop tent, solar power and two-level overlanding setup.
Ford could be giving adventure enthusiasts a completely new way to experience Ford Bronco camping. A newly published patent application reveals an innovative camping system that could transform the Bronco-like SUV into a comfortable, two-level shelter for off-road adventures and overnight trips.
Since bringing back the legendary Bronco nameplate, Ford has expanded the SUV into much more than a traditional off-road vehicle. Different trims, heritage-inspired models and performance-focused versions have helped make the Bronco a lifestyle brand of its own. Now, Ford appears to be exploring its potential as an overlanding and camping platform.
Published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office as US 2026/0233661 A1, the application doesn’t specifically identify the vehicle as a Bronco. However, the SUV shown throughout the patent illustrations looks unmistakably similar to Ford’s modern off-road icon.
Ford’s sleeping setup builds on the idea of using the back row for a platform with clever integrations.
Ford Bronco Sleeping Platform
The foundation of the proposed Ford Bronco camping setup is an integrated sleeping platform that works with the vehicle’s 60/40 split-folding rear seats.
Instead of simply laying a mattress across folded seats, Ford’s design uses multiple connected panels that remain stored against the floor and seatbacks when not in use. When it’s time to camp, the rear seats fold down and the panels unfold to create a larger, level sleeping surface.
The front portion of the platform can be supported in several ways. One design incorporates support arms into the front seatbacks that swing outward and lock into the sleeping platform. Another uses hinges and deployable legs that can rest on the floor or connect with mounting points near the vehicle’s pillars.
This configuration could provide a comfortable sleeping area while leaving valuable storage space underneath.
Ford’s patent also describes a custom inflatable mattress that could feature built-in electric heating elements powered by an auxiliary outlet. Fold-out tables attached to the backs of the front seats could provide convenient surfaces for food, drinks, phones and other camping gear.
A compatible mattress topper and front seat integrations make the platform far more advanced than a simple drop-in design.
Comfortable Ford Bronco Camping
The proposed system isn’t limited to providing a place to sleep. Ford also envisions a retractable canvas sunroof paired with an insect-resistant screen.
That combination would allow campers to open the cabin for fresh air and ventilation while helping keep insects outside. For anyone spending a night in the vehicle, features like these could make the difference between a basic sleeping arrangement and a genuinely useful Bronco overlanding setup.
But the most ambitious portion of the patent is located above the SUV.
Ford envisions the front seats with integrated supports.
Bronco Rooftop Tent Takes Camping Higher
Ford also illustrates a second sleeping platform mounted to the roof. Unlike conventional rooftop tents, this platform can extend forward over the vehicle’s hood, creating an elevated camping area above the front portion of the SUV.
The platform can support a weather-resistant fabric enclosure and structural frame, effectively turning the roof into a rooftop tent. An opening in the platform lines up with the vehicle’s retractable sunroof, allowing campers to enter the upper sleeping area directly from inside the cabin.
That could eliminate the need for an exterior ladder, making the concept particularly interesting for overlanders who want quick and convenient access to a rooftop sleeping area.
The patent also presents several possible configurations. The upper platform could function as a traditional rooftop tent, an elevated outdoor deck or an open-air lounging area.
A pass-through in combination with a retractable sunroof top makes the Bronco a two-level abode.
Solar Power and Two-Level Camping
Ford even put a dog in the drawings. Is there really any more you need?
Ford’s proposed Bronco rooftop tent system includes additional features aimed at extended outdoor adventures. One version incorporates a solar panel that could provide electricity for electronic devices or help supply power to the vehicle’s 12-volt battery.
The upper platform could also incorporate an inflatable mattress and flexible, weather-resistant walls. Combined with the lower sleeping platform, the design could potentially create a two-level camping arrangement capable of accommodating multiple adults and their pets.
Of course, a patent doesn’t guarantee that Ford will actually put this Ford Bronco camping system into production. Automakers routinely patent experimental technologies and designs that never reach dealerships.
Still, the concept demonstrates how Ford could push the Bronco further into the overlanding market. If even part of this patent eventually becomes reality, Bronco owners could have an exceptionally integrated way to sleep, relax and explore without hauling a traditional trailer or installing a complicated aftermarket camping system.
